NEW DELHI, Aug 21: Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Friday called upon young Indians to take an active role in preserving and promoting the country’s rich cultural traditions, describing the younger generation as vital custodians of India’s artistic legacy.

Addressing Malhar 2026, a musical festival organised in New Delhi to connect youngsters with classical music and the traditions of monsoon ragas, Radhakrishnan underlined the importance of passing India’s traditional performing arts from one generation to the next.

He said initiatives such as the festival can help strengthen young people’s connection with the country’s classical traditions while highlighting the enduring relevance of Indian music.

The programme featured performances by renowned classical vocalists, percussionists and instrumentalists, offering audiences an opportunity to experience the diversity of India’s musical heritage.

The Vice President also stressed the need to protect intangible cultural traditions, strengthen music education and encourage greater appreciation of the country’s artistic practices among younger generations.

During the event, Radhakrishnan presented the Antar Hriday Cultural Diplomacy Award to Saurav Sharma of Nepal, recognising his contribution to cultural exchange.

He also felicitated noted artists Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar and Pandit Rajendra Gangani for their distinguished contributions to Indian music, dance and the wider cultural sphere.

The Vice President said sustained efforts to engage young people with traditional art forms would help ensure that India’s cultural knowledge and artistic practices remain vibrant and relevant for future generations.
