NEW DELHI, Aug 29: India observed National Sports Day on Saturday, commemorating the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand and celebrating the country’s sporting achievements and culture.

Born on August 29, 1905, Dhyan Chand remains one of the most celebrated figures in Indian sporting history. Known for his exceptional control and goal-scoring ability, the hockey great played a key role in India’s Olympic success during the country’s golden era of the sport.

Dhyan Chand was part of the Indian teams that won Olympic gold medals in hockey at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Games. His remarkable career and contribution to Indian hockey have earned him a lasting place in the nation’s sporting heritage.

National Sports Day serves as an occasion to recognise athletes, coaches and sports personalities who have contributed to India’s progress across different disciplines. The day also promotes participation in sports and encourages young people to pursue physical fitness and competitive excellence.

The 2026 observance comes after a strong year for Indian sport, with the country recording notable performances across cricket, boxing, athletics, weightlifting, judo and other disciplines.

The celebration also highlights the importance of developing sporting talent at the grassroots level and creating opportunities for young athletes to compete at national and international levels.
