Washington, Aug 22: US health authorities are investigating a multistate outbreak involving E. coli and Salmonella infections that has been linked to alfalfa sprouts, raising fresh concerns over foodborne illnesses and contamination risks.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health agencies reported 55 infections associated with the outbreak on Friday. Investigators are working to identify the specific source of contamination and determine how the products reached consumers.

Alfalfa sprouts can provide a suitable environment for bacteria to multiply because of the warm and humid conditions required during the sprouting process. Contaminated products can therefore pose a health risk even when they appear fresh and normal.

Authorities trace infections

Public health investigators are collecting information from affected patients and examining potential links between reported illnesses and consumption of alfalfa sprouts.

E. coli and Salmonella infections can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea and fever. Some infections may become severe and require medical attention, particularly when complications develop.

Health officials are using epidemiological investigations to identify common exposure patterns and determine whether additional cases may have gone undetected.

Food safety measures remain crucial

The investigation highlights the importance of proper food handling and stronger contamination controls throughout the production and distribution chain.

Consumers are generally advised to follow public health guidance concerning products identified as being associated with an outbreak. Food producers and retailers also face pressure to strengthen hygiene practices and ensure that potentially contaminated products are identified quickly.

The investigation remains ongoing as US health agencies work to establish the full extent of the outbreak and prevent additional infections.

Officials are expected to provide further information as laboratory testing and epidemiological investigations progress.
