Bangladesh, July 03 : Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to make her first public appearance since stepping down from office, with a virtual address scheduled at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi on August 5. If it takes place, the event will mark her first public remarks since leaving Bangladesh nearly two years ago.

Hasina arrived in India on August 5, 2024, after widespread unrest and violent clashes between anti-government protesters, supporters of her administration, and security forces. The turmoil resulted in hundreds of deaths and intensified public anger, ultimately leading to the end of her tenure.

Since relocating to India, the former prime minister has largely stayed out of the public spotlight, limiting her engagement to written interviews and statements. The planned virtual speech would therefore represent a significant shift in her public profile.

The development comes weeks after Hasina indicated that she intends to return to Bangladesh later this year. Her comments have renewed attention on the political situation in the country and the future of her role in national affairs.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has continued diplomatic efforts seeking Hasina’s extradition from India. The issue remains a sensitive point in bilateral relations, with Dhaka repeatedly raising the matter through official channels.

India has maintained that Hasina is not permitted to conduct political activities while residing in the country. However, Bangladeshi authorities have expressed concerns that her public remarks and media interactions could influence domestic politics and complicate efforts to improve ties between the two neighbours.

Observers say the proposed address is likely to be closely watched in both countries, as it could provide insight into Hasina’s future political plans and the evolving dynamics of India-Bangladesh relations. Whether the virtual appearance signals a more active public role ahead remains to be seen.
