NEW YORK, Aug 25: Tennis legend Roger Federer is set to return to the US Open this week, four years after his retirement from professional tennis, for a pair of exhibition matches during Fan Week.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion’s appearance was confirmed by the US Open on Sunday, generating considerable excitement among tennis fans ahead of the year’s final major tournament.

Federer will take part in exhibition action at Flushing Meadows on August 25. His return comes shortly after Serena Williams also made headlines with her planned appearance in the revamped US Open mixed doubles competition.

Despite returning to the tournament grounds, Federer has made clear that his appearance should not be viewed as the beginning of another professional career.

The Swiss star retired from competitive tennis in 2022 after a celebrated career that included 20 Grand Slam titles, 103 ATP singles trophies and a record eight Wimbledon championships.

His return provides fans with an opportunity to see one of the sport’s most influential figures back on a tennis court at the venue where he enjoyed some of his most memorable Grand Slam campaigns.

The exhibition matches are part of the build up to the 2026 US Open, which is scheduled to begin on August 30.

Federer’s appearance is expected to add further star power to an already high-profile tournament week, with several former champions and leading current players preparing for the hard court major.

The event also highlights the enduring popularity of tennis icons whose careers continue to attract global attention even after retirement.
