LONDON, Aug 13: England Test captain Joe Root has scrapped the team’s midnight curfew ahead of the upcoming home series against Pakistan, saying players should be trusted to manage their behaviour responsibly.
The decision marks a change in approach following a period of heightened scrutiny over England’s off-field conduct. The previous curfew had been introduced after several incidents involving players during the team’s recent campaigns.
Root, who returned to the Test captaincy after Ben Stokes’ retirement, said professional cricketers should be treated as responsible adults and expected to make sensible decisions away from the field.
The new leadership structure, which includes head coach Stephen Fleming, is seeking to build a positive team environment while maintaining high standards of professionalism.
England are preparing for a three-Test series against Pakistan, beginning on August 19. Root’s decision to remove the restriction reflects the team’s attempt to balance discipline with greater personal responsibility.
The captain’s approach also signals a shift from enforcing strict rules to placing greater emphasis on leadership, trust and accountability within the squad.
