NEW DELHI, Aug 23: The admission process for the 2026-27 academic session at Jawaharlal Nehru University has encountered a legal hurdle after the Delhi High Court directed that the process be kept on hold over concerns surrounding the use of deprivation points.

The court’s intervention has created uncertainty for applicants waiting for the next stages of admission. The issue relates to the criteria used by the university while assessing candidates for admission and the manner in which deprivation points are awarded.

The development could affect students who have already completed application-related formalities and are waiting for admission decisions. Further proceedings are expected to determine how the disputed criteria should be applied.

JNU’s admission process attracts applicants from across the country for undergraduate, postgraduate, research and other academic programmes. Any alteration in the admission framework can therefore have implications for a large pool of candidates.

The court’s order has also brought renewed attention to admission policies intended to widen access to higher education. Supporters of such measures argue that additional consideration can help students from disadvantaged backgrounds, while legal scrutiny has focused on whether the existing framework complies with applicable rules.

Students have been advised to monitor official university communications for revised schedules and instructions rather than relying on unverified updates.

The case comes at a time when admission procedures at universities across India are undergoing increased scrutiny over transparency, eligibility criteria and reservation-related provisions. The outcome of the proceedings is expected to provide greater clarity for candidates seeking admission to JNU for the new academic session.
