NEW DELHI, Aug 13: India have withdrawn from the FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) opting to prioritise preparation for a high profile friendly against Brazil scheduled for October 3.
AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey said the decision was taken as the national team looks to prepare specifically for the Brazil fixture. The federation is also planning additional high-profile international friendlies as part of its strategy.
The withdrawal means India will miss an opportunity to compete in the ASEAN regional tournament, but the AIFF believes the proposed friendly schedule will provide the national side with stronger international exposure.
The move comes as Indian football continues to seek more competitive opportunities and a clearer long-term pathway for the national team.
The Brazil match is expected to attract significant attention, with the AIFF viewing it as an important occasion for Indian football and an opportunity for players to test themselves against one of the world’s leading football nations.
The federation’s decision has also triggered debate among football followers, with some questioning whether competitive tournament football should have been prioritised over friendly matches.
