NEW DELHI, Aug 13: India is considering wide ranging changes to the health insurance sector aimed at improving transparency, standardising treatment costs and helping contain rising medical expenses, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The proposed reforms could include benchmark rates for medical procedures, greater clarity in insurance products and the development of a nationwide platform for processing claims.

The move comes amid concerns over rising healthcare costs and medical inflation, which have increased the financial burden on patients and families. A more standardised framework is expected to make it easier for consumers to compare policies and understand the coverage available to them.

One proposal under consideration is a common health insurance product with standardised coverage and pricing. Such an arrangement could provide consumers with greater clarity while reducing variations in policy terms across insurers.

A nationwide claims exchange is also being considered as part of the broader reform process. The mechanism could streamline interactions between insurers, hospitals and policyholders and potentially make claims processing more efficient.

The reforms are being discussed as policymakers seek to strengthen India’s health insurance ecosystem and improve access to affordable medical care. Greater transparency in billing and treatment costs could also help address disputes between hospitals, insurers and patients.

The government is expected to examine the proposals before finalising any changes to the regulatory framework.

The initiative could have significant implications for patients who depend on health insurance to meet hospitalisation and treatment expenses, particularly as the cost of specialised healthcare continues to rise.
