New Delhi, Aug 27: India is stepping up efforts to attract Japanese investment into data centres, artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing as the country seeks to strengthen its position as a major global technology hub.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted opportunities for Japanese companies in India’s rapidly expanding digital infrastructure ecosystem during his ongoing engagement with businesses in Japan.

India has emerged as an increasingly attractive destination for large-scale data centre investment, supported by growing demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence services and digital platforms.

The country has secured commitments of around $200 billion from leading global hyperscalers, according to industry estimates cited in recent discussions.

The government is seeking to build on this momentum by encouraging Japanese companies to participate in emerging technology sectors and create deeper industrial partnerships.

Semiconductor manufacturing is another major area of focus, with India attempting to develop a stronger domestic electronics and chip ecosystem. Collaboration with Japanese firms could provide access to technology, capital and specialised expertise.

The investment push comes as India and Japan deepen economic engagement across manufacturing, technology and advanced industries.

Greater Japanese participation in these sectors could also support employment, supply chain development and India’s broader ambition to become a competitive destination for high-value technology investment.
