NEW DELHI, Aug 11: India made an impressive start at the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, winning 17 medals, including four gold, on the opening day of the competition.

The Indian contingent secured four gold, four silver and nine bronze medals as the championships got underway in Nigeria, giving the team an early lead in the medal standings.

Indian fencers produced strong performances across the opening day events, with several athletes reaching the podium and contributing to the country’s medal tally.

The encouraging beginning highlights the growing depth of Indian fencing at the junior and under-23 levels. The results also provide an important boost to athletes preparing for higher level international competitions.

With several events still remaining, India will look to build on its opening-day performance and add to its medal collection during the remainder of the championship.

The strong showing in Lagos comes as Indian sport continues to focus on developing younger athletes across Olympic and Commonwealth disciplines.
