New Delhi, Aug 6: The Centre is preparing to dilute an additional stake in Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) through an Offer for Sale (OFS), continuing its broader disinvestment programme aimed at mobilising resources and increasing public shareholding in the country’s largest insurer.

Officials familiar with the development said the proposed share sale is expected to improve liquidity in LIC’s stock while helping the government move closer to its long-term divestment objectives. The move also aligns with regulatory requirements related to minimum public shareholding for listed companies.

Market participants believe the transaction could attract strong interest from institutional investors as well as retail buyers, given LIC’s dominant presence in India’s insurance sector. The government has been steadily reducing its holding after the insurer’s landmark public listing.

Analysts said proceeds from the stake sale would support the government’s fiscal management efforts while expanding investor participation in one of India’s most valuable financial institutions. They added that the timing of the issue would depend on market conditions to ensure healthy demand.

Financial experts also noted that higher public float can improve stock liquidity and price discovery, making the company more attractive to long-term investors.

The proposed OFS reflects the government’s continued focus on balancing fiscal priorities with capital market development, while reinforcing confidence in India’s public sector enterprises.
