NEW DELHI: India’s healthcare sector continues to face elevated cyber threats, with the finance and healthcare industries remaining among the sectors targeted by malicious online activity, according to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

The warning comes as hospitals, diagnostic centres and other medical institutions increasingly depend on digital platforms for patient records, consultations, payments and other essential services.

The growing use of connected healthcare systems has expanded the potential impact of cyber incidents. A successful attack on a medical organisation can disrupt digital services while potentially exposing sensitive patient and institutional information.

Healthcare institutions are therefore facing the dual challenge of expanding technology-driven services while strengthening protection against cyberattacks.

Experts have increasingly stressed the need for hospitals to maintain updated security systems, monitor networks for suspicious activity and ensure that staff are trained to identify phishing attempts and other common cyber risks.

The issue is particularly significant because medical facilities often operate critical systems that need to remain available around the clock. Disruptions can affect appointments, diagnostics, patient records and administrative operations.

The latest assessment also highlights the importance of treating cybersecurity as an integral part of healthcare infrastructure rather than solely as an information-technology concern.

As India’s digital health ecosystem expands, hospitals and healthcare providers will need stronger safeguards to protect patient data and maintain continuity of medical services.

The continued targeting of the sector underscores the need for healthcare organisations to strengthen cyber preparedness alongside their digital transformation efforts.
