NEW DELHI, Aug. 21: Brazil has announced an investment of around 2.3 billion reais ($444.2 million) to strengthen its artificial intelligence ecosystem, including the development of major supercomputing infrastructure.

The programme will divide key projects between Chinese and US technology companies, reflecting Brazil’s effort to expand its computing capabilities while maintaining strategic flexibility in the global technology sector.

More than 1.3 billion reais will support a supercomputing project in Rio de Janeiro involving China’s Huawei and iFlytek. The facility is expected to support the development of large language models for general and specialised artificial intelligence applications.

Another 1 billion reais is earmarked for a supercomputer in Rio Grande do Norte. The facility is expected to rank among the world’s top 10 systems for AI processing power, with US chipmaker Nvidia anticipated to supply the technology.

The projects are being funded through Brazil’s National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development. The government also plans initiatives covering semiconductor technology, cloud services and algorithmic transparency.

Brazil expects the new supercomputing infrastructure to become operational by the end of 2027. Officials see the programme as a way to strengthen domestic technological capabilities and reduce dependence on any single foreign technology provider.

The move comes as governments worldwide increase investments in AI infrastructure, computing power and semiconductor technologies to support the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.
