CARDIFF, Aug 16: Arsenal opened the new English football season in impressive fashion, defeating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium.
Riccardo Calafiori gave Arsenal a dream start, finding the net just 23 seconds into the contest. His early strike set the tone for a dominant display from the Premier League champions.
Kai Havertz doubled the advantage before half-time, putting Arsenal firmly in control. Captain Martin Odegaard then added a third goal early in the second half to complete a comprehensive victory.
Manchester City, playing their first competitive match under new manager Enzo Maresca, struggled to create enough attacking pressure against an organised Arsenal defence. David Raya also produced a confident performance in goal as the Gunners secured a clean sheet.
The result provides Mikel Arteta with an early boost as Arsenal prepare to defend their Premier League title. The London club will now look to carry the momentum into the league campaign.
For City, the defeat offers Maresca an early indication of the work required as he begins his tenure following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
Arsenal’s commanding performance has also raised expectations around their prospects in the upcoming domestic campaign.
