New Delhi, Aug 27: India and Japan are stepping up cooperation in semiconductors and artificial intelligence, with both sides placing advanced technology at the centre of their broader economic security partnership.

The developments followed a high-level industry roundtable and bilateral discussions in Tokyo involving government officials, industry representatives and technology stakeholders. The talks focused on strengthening collaboration in chip manufacturing, AI, investment and advanced technologies.

The two countries are also looking to build more reliable technology supply chains as demand for semiconductors rises across industries. Cooperation in research, talent development and investment is expected to support the expansion of their respective technology ecosystems.

Semiconductors have become increasingly important to both economies as chips are required for smartphones, automobiles, telecommunications equipment, artificial intelligence systems and advanced computing infrastructure.

For India, closer engagement with Japan could provide opportunities to attract investment and technical expertise while supporting the country’s efforts to establish a stronger domestic semiconductor industry.

Japan, meanwhile, has extensive experience in semiconductor materials, equipment and advanced manufacturing, areas that could complement India’s growing ambitions in chip production and electronics.

AI was another major area of discussion, reflecting the rapid growth of demand for computing infrastructure and specialised processors. The two countries are seeking to encourage partnerships that can support innovation while improving resilience across critical technology supply chains.

The cooperation comes as India continues to expand its semiconductor ecosystem and promote domestic capabilities across chip design, manufacturing, packaging and related technologies.

The emerging partnership is expected to create further opportunities for companies, researchers and technology institutions in both countries, while strengthening their position in an increasingly competitive global technology landscape.
