Kabul, Aug 26: The Afghanistan Premier League is set to make its comeback later this year, with the franchise-based T20 tournament scheduled to begin on December 27 after an eight year absence.

The competition was last held in 2018, when its inaugural edition took place in the United Arab Emirates with five teams participating.

The planned return represents another significant step in the development of Afghanistan’s domestic cricket structure, which has expanded considerably since the league’s first edition.

The tournament is expected to provide Afghan players with another platform to gain experience in the shortest format while creating opportunities for international cricketers to participate in the country’s franchise competition.

The revival also comes at a time when Afghanistan has strengthened its position in international cricket. Its national side has established itself as a competitive force across formats, while domestic competitions have increasingly contributed to the development of emerging talent.

The return of the league is likely to generate renewed interest among supporters and could provide a further boost to Afghanistan’s cricketing ecosystem.

The tournament’s December 27 start date marks the beginning of a new chapter for a competition that has remained absent from the cricket calendar since its debut season eight years ago.
