LOS ANGELES, Aug 24: The long awaited third instalment of the National Treasure franchise appears to be moving forward, with director Jon Turteltaub confirming that the script for National Treasure 3 has been approved.

The development has renewed interest in the possible return of Nicolas Cage as treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates, the character he portrayed in the first two films.

The original franchise began with National Treasure in 2004, followed by National Treasure: Book of Secrets in 2007. Both films starred Cage as Gates, whose adventures revolved around historical mysteries, secret clues and hidden treasures.

Script development brings franchise back into focus

Turteltaub’s latest comments suggest that the long discussed sequel has moved beyond the speculation that has surrounded the project for years.

Although Cage’s return has not been presented as a completed casting announcement, the possibility is expected to generate excitement among fans of the earlier films.

The franchise has retained a strong following because of its combination of historical puzzles, action and adventure.

Fans await official production details

The confirmation regarding the screenplay represents a significant step for the project, but several details remain unclear, including the production schedule, release date and final cast.

If Cage returns, the new film could reunite audiences with Benjamin Gates after nearly two decades since the second theatrical instalment.

The project could also give the studio an opportunity to introduce the treasure-hunting series to a new generation while retaining the elements that made the original films popular.

For now, fans will have to wait for official announcements regarding the cast and production timeline.
