New Delhi, Aug 21: Indian equity markets closed almost unchanged on Friday as investors remained cautious amid geopolitical uncertainty and mixed global cues. The Sensex gained just 3 points, while the Nifty 50 finished above the 24,250 level.

The muted session came despite gains in several major stocks, with investors closely monitoring developments in global markets and movements in crude oil prices.

Market participants continued to assess the impact of geopolitical tensions on energy costs, inflation and the broader economic outlook. The uncertainty has made investors more selective, particularly in sectors that could be affected by higher commodity prices.

Financial stocks provided some support to domestic benchmarks during the session. Market reports identified Kotak Mahindra Bank, Power Grid, Maruti Suzuki and Trent among the notable stocks influencing trading activity.

Analysts said the domestic market continues to receive support from India’s economic fundamentals, although external risks are preventing a stronger upward move.

Global financial markets have also faced pressure from volatility in US bonds and concerns surrounding energy supplies. The international backdrop remains particularly important for India because changes in crude prices can influence inflation, the rupee and corporate costs.

Investors are now expected to track upcoming global economic data and central bank signals for indications about the future direction of interest rates.

The cautious trading pattern highlights the balance between domestic growth expectations and risks emerging from international markets.
