India, Aug. 21: Pharmaceutical companies are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to accelerate drug research and development, as the industry seeks to reduce costs and shorten the lengthy process of bringing new medicines to patients.

According to a Reuters report published on August 20, drugmakers are expanding their use of AI across research and development, with the technology being used to analyse large volumes of scientific data and support the identification of potential treatments.

The growing adoption of AI reflects efforts by pharmaceutical companies to improve efficiency in an industry where developing a new medicine can require years of research and substantial investment.

AI tools can assist researchers in examining biological information, identifying promising drug candidates and prioritising areas for further investigation. Companies are increasingly viewing the technology as a way to complement scientists rather than replace conventional research methods.

The pharmaceutical sector has been under pressure to control development expenses while maintaining a steady pipeline of new treatments. Faster analysis and improved decision-making could help companies determine earlier which research programmes are worth pursuing.

The technology is also attracting interest as drugmakers compete to develop innovative treatments for complex diseases. However, AI-generated findings still require laboratory research, clinical testing and regulatory review before medicines can reach patients.

The increasing use of artificial intelligence therefore marks a significant shift in pharmaceutical research, with companies betting that advanced computing and data analysis can make the drug-development process faster and more efficient.
