India, Aug. 21: The Democratic Republic of Congo has been allocated 70,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine as health authorities intensify efforts to control the country’s largest ever outbreak of the deadly disease, the World Health Organization said on Thursday.

The vaccine, manufactured by Merck, is being made available as part of the international response to the escalating public health emergency. Health teams are working to strengthen vaccination and disease control measures in affected communities.

The outbreak has placed additional pressure on local healthcare systems, with authorities focusing on identifying cases, monitoring contacts and limiting further transmission.

The latest vaccine allocation follows a sharp rise in the impact of the outbreak. Reuters reported earlier this week that the current epidemic had become the deadliest Ebola outbreak in Congo’s history, surpassing the death toll recorded during the 2018–2020 outbreak.

Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in serious cases, bleeding. Rapid diagnosis, isolation of suspected cases and timely vaccination are among the key measures used to contain transmission.

International health agencies and local authorities continue to coordinate their response as they seek to prevent the virus from spreading further.

The deployment of additional vaccine doses is expected to strengthen Congo’s ability to protect people at higher risk and support efforts to bring the outbreak under control.
