New Delhi, Aug. 6: Public health experts have underlined the importance of balancing clean energy initiatives with long-term environmental and health considerations, noting that excessive pressure on water resources can have far-reaching consequences for communities.

The discussion has gained attention amid concerns over the growing use of water-intensive crops for ethanol production. Specialists warned that continued dependence on such feedstocks could increase stress on groundwater reserves, particularly in regions already experiencing water scarcity.

Environmental health researchers said declining water availability directly affects sanitation, food production and disease prevention, making sustainable resource management an essential component of public health planning. They added that policies promoting alternative fuels should consider the complete environmental footprint rather than focusing solely on emission reductions.

Experts also advocated greater investment in ethanol production from agricultural waste and other non-food biomass, describing it as a more sustainable approach that can reduce pressure on farmland and freshwater resources.

Healthcare professionals believe that future energy policies should integrate environmental protection with public health priorities to ensure long-term benefits for both people and ecosystems. They emphasised that safeguarding water resources remains fundamental to maintaining food security, preventing health risks and supporting sustainable development.
