NEW DELHI: The Centre has ordered the blocking of 7,393 online links allegedly involved in the unauthorised distribution of films and other audiovisual content, reinforcing its efforts to curb digital piracy. The action includes restrictions on 4,996 Telegram channels and 1,263 websites found to be facilitating the circulation of copyrighted material.

The information was shared by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan in a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The reply outlined the government’s ongoing measures to tackle illegal online dissemination of movies, OTT programmes and other protected entertainment content across digital platforms.

According to the ministry, authorities have adopted a stronger enforcement approach following amendments to the Cinematograph Act in 2023. The revised legislation introduced stricter provisions aimed at preventing unauthorised recording, transmission and online sharing of films, while enabling faster action against copyright violations.

The government stated that intermediaries are required to comply with lawful blocking directions issued under the existing legal framework. The move is intended to safeguard the interests of filmmakers, producers and other stakeholders in the entertainment industry, who continue to face significant revenue losses due to piracy.

Officials said the crackdown forms part of a broader strategy to protect intellectual property rights and promote a secure digital ecosystem for the film and streaming sectors. Authorities will continue monitoring online platforms and take action against entities found violating copyright laws.
